KYIV -

        Russia said on Monday that dozens of its soldiers had been killed in one of the deadliest attacks of Ukraine's war, prompting nationalist bloggers to demand punishment for commanders responsible for setting up soldiers near an ammunition depot.

Russian President Vladimir Putin commented on the state of Russia-U.S. relations during a ceremony where the president received letters of credence from 17 newly-appointed ambassadors of foreign states. He said that Russia- USA relations are in deep crisis.

Russian paramilitary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin said yesterday he had received "a promise" of more ammunition from the Russian army after he threatened to pull his frontline Wagner troops out of Bakhmut.

Ukrainian and Western officials have warned

 that Russia plans to launch a new, broad offensive in the Donbas to try to turn the tide of the conflict as the war approaches the one-year mark.

But Ukrainian officials say that Moscow is having trouble mounting such an offensive.

John Kirby, a White House spokesperson on national security issues, said that the U.S. has “additional information” about Iran’s support for Russia’s war in Ukraine is growing.

In a statement issued by the Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, it claimed, without providing evidence, that Russian forces would strike the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, and then report a radiation leak from the largest plant in Europe, in order to launch an international investigation that would stop the war and give Russian forces the rest they need to regroup before the Ukrainian counterattack.

 Ukraine says its preparations for a spring counter-offensive are almost complete. When it’s launched, probably in the south, it will mark a pivotal moment in the conflict. But the Russians have had nearly six months to prepare the ground – and build an elaborate array of defenses. Breaking through will present a huge challenge.
