According to government data released by the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden Tuesday (May 30, 2023), the office noted that “not since 2002 has such a large number of naturalizations been recorded within one year”.

Last year, people from 171 nationalities received a German passport. Syrians made up the largest group at 29 percent. A total of 48,300 Syrians were naturalized – more than double the number in 2021 and seven times as many as in 2020, their average age was 24.8 years, and males accounted for two-thirds of Syrian naturalized. Before obtaining citizenship, Syrians stayed in Germany for an average of 6.4 years.

Syrians seeking protection to escape the humanitarian crimes committed against Syrians by the Bashar al-Assad regime migrated mainly to Germany between 2014 and 2016 and are now increasingly meeting the requirements for naturalization, most notably sufficient language skills, a sufficient source of income and, usually, spending at least eight years in Germany.

But German citizenship can also be obtained after six years of residence if you show a great ability to integrate, such as having a very good level of the German language and positively engaging in civil life, and it allows naturalizing spouses and minor children without a minimum residence, in 2022 15,400 Syrians were naturalized in this way, almost three times as many as in the previous year.

In general, Syrians experienced the highest increase in naturalization (an increase of 29,200 naturalization cases), followed by Ukrainians (an increase of more than 3,700), Iraqis (more than 2,400) and Turks (more than 2,000).

5,600 Ukrainians were naturalized in 2022, a threefold increase compared to the previous year. The average age of Ukrainian naturalized persons was 36.1 years, 69% of them were women, and before their naturalization they spent an average of 13.3 years in Germany.

Moreover, the number of Turkish naturalized in 2022 amounted to about 14,200 people, which is an increase of 16 percent compared to last year. Their average stay in Germany before naturalization was 24.2 years. After the Syrians, the Turks are in second place in terms of obtaining German citizenship in 2022.
