The Argentine Football League was hastily renamed the "Diego Maradona Cup", and matches in the first round of the group stage began on Saturday, after standing for a minute of silence in tribute to the late legend.
Players, coaches, and even referees expressed their love and appreciation for the country's most famous soccer star.
Referees wore T-shirts that read "Thank you Diego" and gifted the goals players to the former World Cup champion, who died of a heart attack last Wednesday.
The players of Jimnasia e Esgrima, the club Maradona was coaching, entered the field wearing T-shirts with Maradona's name and number 10 on the back and chanted his name in the dressing room after the 1-0 win over Velez Sarsfield.
"We want to dedicate this victory to our father, because he was the father of all of us. He was calling us and asking if we wanted something, and we are happy to give him this victory," Jimnasia player, Victor Ayala, told TEC TV
Another Jimnasia player, substitute, Lucas Lect, was pictured wearing an old pair of shoes given to him by the former Boca Juniors and Napoli player Maradona.
Maradona is considered one of the greatest footballers of all time, and he helped his country win the World Cup in 1986.
Maradona played football for Boca Juniors, Naples, Barcelona and others, and millions of people adored him for his wonderful skills.
