Maduro said the move was aimed at overturning the International Conference on the political process in Venezuela, an initiative to promote peaceful dialogue between Maduro's government and opposition parties held in neighboring Colombia on April 25.

"This decision taken by the US government is a farce and a slap in the face of the international conference held in Bogota and the almost unanimous call for the lifting of sanctions on Venezuela," Maduro said at a public event in central Caracas on the occasion of International Workers' Day.

Maduro said he was angry about the theft of the Venezuelan oil company Citgo Petroleum, based in the United States, which owns refineries, pipelines, and terminals, and supplies thousands of gas stations in the United States.

"On behalf of all the people of Venezuela, we reject and indignantly denounce the theft of Citgo by the US government and the United platform of Venezuela," he added, the name given to the opposition coalition.

The U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control reportedly authorized the sale of shares in Petroleos de Venezuela, Citgo's parent company, to settle creditor claims and allowed the Venezuelan opposition to negotiate settlements.
