During a speech at the Palestinian club, quoted by the radio station "Cooperativa", the president of the Republic of Chile Gabriel boric said on Thursday : "we plan to raise the
level of official representation in Palestine, and now we have a charge d'affaires there. We plan to open an embassy before the end of our mandate,"he said.
The Chilean President expressed regret that Palestine is not on the international political maps.
Chile has a representative office in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, which was opened in April 1998, while Palestine has an embassy in Santiago.
And in 2011, the Republic of Chile recognized Palestine as an independent state; then it supported its accession to the "UNESCO".
The Chilean and Palestinian peoples are closely connected, and the number of Palestinians in Chile is currently about 300 thousand people; thus, the Palestinian community is the largest outside the Middle East.
President Gabriel boric is known to be a supporter of the Palestinian cause; he visited the West Bank on October 7, 2021, and met with President Mahmoud Abbas.
Boric, 36, has been president of the Republic of Chile since December 19, 2021.
