During the current weekend
Strong arctic winds in the northeastern United States and eastern Canada, led to record temperatures.
The US meteorological service said that the temperature on the top of Mount Washington in the state of New Hampshire (taking into account the wind chill) reached minus 78 degrees Celsius on Friday evening. This peak is famous for recording the "worst weather in the world".
The "Axios" website explained that 78 degrees Celsius below zero is the lowest recorded degree in the United States, since the current wind chill meter began to be used, about two decades ago.
It was reported that the severe cold threatens the lives of millions, living in New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island.
According to the website "Weather Channel", the previous temperature record was minus 74 degrees Celsius.
Minus 39 degrees Celsius were also recorded in Boston earlier on Saturday morning, the coldest temperature recorded there since at least 1944.
In Canada, the Ministry of the Environment issued severe cold warnings for a large part of Quebec and the Maritime provinces in the east of the country, where temperatures in several areas reached 40 degrees Celsius or even minus 50 Celsius.
The Arctic cold caused record electricity consumption in Quebec and peaked on Friday afternoon. The electric company "Hydro Quebec" invited its customers to lower the temperature of heating appliances by one or two degrees and use less hot water.
