Los Angeles Police announced that the gunman suspected of shooting 10 people during the Lunar New Year celebrations in California, had shot himself and committed suicide while security forces were tracking him.
Los Angeles County Police Chief Robert Luna said that the police were tracking a vehicle, and when its members approached it, they heard one shot from inside it. "The suspect was shot and pronounced dead at the scene," Luna added.
The suspect is of Asian origin and is 72 years old, he was identified as Ho Kan Tran. This man is the only suspect in the Monterey Park shooting in California, Luna said, adding that the motive for this attack on Lunar New Year is not yet known, and the investigation is still ongoing.
Police surrounded a white vehicle after a long chase and found a dead body inside, according to images broadcast by television channels.
President Joe Biden on Sunday ordered American flags to be lowered in public buildings in honor of the victims of the mass shooting in Monterey Park, California.
Biden directed that flags be lowered until sunset on January 26 "out of respect for the victims of the senseless acts of violence committed on January 21, 2023 in Monterey Park, California," according to a White House statement.
In addition to the dead, at least ten other people were injured in the random shooting in Monterey Park, according to eyewitnesses.
Los Angeles Police Chief Robert Luna spoke about a second incident in the city of alambra that took place about 20 minutes after the attack in Monterey Park. In the details, an Asian man with a gun entered a disco, but was cornered and disarmed. The man fled and no injuries were reported.
Luna said investigators were looking into whether the two incidents were related.
"We don't know if this particular crime is a hate crime under the law, but who goes into a disco and shoots about 20 people?""
Biden wrote on Twitter that he and his wife Jill were "praying for the lives of those killed and injured in the bloody shooting in Monterey Park", adding "I am closely monitoring the situation".
