In stabbing attacks in two remote areas of Canada, a Canadian Mounted Police source reported that 10 people were killed Sunday and 15 others were wounded in stabbings at 13 locations and transferred to several hospitals. Police continue to pursue suspects in parallel with the continued investigation of crime scenes.

Ronda Blackmore, assistant commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, told a press conference: "We have detected ten deaths in 13 locations in the James Smith Cree Nation and Waldon areas of Saskatchewan."

It added that "a number of other victims have been injured, including 15 who have so far been transferred to various hospitals", explaining that the police are searching for "suspects" and investigating "crime scenes". The police issued an alert to the residents of each province of Saskatchewan regarding the presence of a dangerous person.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called Sunday's mass challenge "appalling and heartbreaking."

"The attacks in Saskatchewan today are horrific and heartbreaking," he tweeted, adding, "I think of those who lost loved ones and those who were injured."

RCMP Commissioner Blackmore said police received a first call at 5.40 local time about a white weapon attack at James Smith's Cree Nation, followed by  other attacks. The authorities believed that "some of the victims were targeted by the suspects, while the rest were attacked in random form".

Initially, the suspects were reported in Saskatchewan Province's capital, Regina, more than 300 kilometres south.

The warning and searches were therefore extended to the vast neighbouring provinces of Manitoba and Alberta.

The Saskatchewan Health Authority told AFP news agency that it had activated emergency protocols to deal with "a large number of infected people in a critical situation."

The suspects, Damien Sanderson and Miles Sanderson, aged 30 and 31, were identified. They are suspected of not escaping in a black Nissan. The "maximum capacity" of the police forces was deployed to arrest them.

The 2500-strong James Smith Cree Nishin District declared a state of local emergency. Saskatchewan residents were also asked to stay indoors to ensure their safety.
