After they occupied downtown more than two weeks ago, security forces in the Canadian capital of Ottawa began preparing to confront protesting truckers.
In a warning aimed at ending a days-long protest against restrictions against the corona virus, Ottawa police called on truck drivers closing downtown to leave or face arrest.
Interim Police Chief Steve Bell pledged to "restore the entire downtown area and every area occupied by the protesters within the coming days."
The US "New York Times" said that today security forces are moving towards downtown, apparently preparing for a major crackdown on protesters.
The police handed out leaflets to the truckers saying, "You have to leave the area now. Anybody close the streets.. A Show of Arrest. " Police also recorded violations of dozens of vehicles blocking central Ottawa.
Meanwhile, Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino accused extremist groups of helping organize the protests, and repeated accusations that some sides wanted to overthrow the Liberal government.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau did the Emergency Act, which is rarely used in the country to give the government more power to end protests.
Since late January, protesters in trucks and other vehicles have piled up in the streets of the capital and blocked border crossings to express their refusal to require vaccination against Corona to cross the Canada - United States border, and protests later turned to denouncing all health restrictions imposed to counter the pandemic.
