Michigan health authorities opened an urgent investigation after photos were posted on Instagram showing doctors and nurses in the O.R. showing off organs removed from a patient's body following surgery.
The photos showed an extended patient in the operating room, while more than one doctor and two nurses stood in front of him carrying parts that appeared to be organs and tissues removed from his body.
One of the photos showing a doctor with an unclear human organ was attached because of the blood that covered him with a comment saying: "This new game in the O.R.... Can you guess the weight of this organ? "
It should be noted that the group behind these publications was identified as obstetrics and gynaecologists at a Sputrum Helth hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
For her part, Spectrum Helth said in a statement that it had opened an investigation into the incident, noting "We are shocked to be posting such images on Instagram. We are working to resolve this problem, and to ensure that it does not happen again in the future. "
The National Patient Defence Foundation, in turn, commented on the incident: Instagram deleted the photos. We affirm that the health-care sector must remain free from such practices. The lives and privacy of patients must never be underestimated. "
