The National Election Commission in Egypt announced today, Monday, the holding of
presidential elections in the country next December, with the door to receive applications
for candidates between the fifth and the 14th of October.

During a press conference, advisor Walid Hamza, chairman of the National Elections
Commission, explained the details of the schedule of the upcoming constitutional
entitlement, saying that the elections will be held on three days, with Egyptians abroad on
the first, second and third days of December, and inside Egypt on the 10th, 11th and 12th of
the same month, pointing out that the final list of presidential candidates and the official
start of the election campaign will be announced on the ninth of November.
According to the election schedule, the result of the elections will be announced on
December 18. In case of a run-off, voting will take place outside Egypt on the fifth, sixth and
seventh of January, and inside Egypt during the period from the eighth to January 10,
provided that the entire electoral process ends on January 16, which is about four months
before the end of the current term of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in early April next.
According to the Egyptian constitution, to run for presidential elections, a candidate must
obtain the recommendation of at least 20 members of the House of Representatives or
collect popular power of attorney from 25 thousand citizens who have the right to vote in at
least 15 governorates, provided that the minimum number in each governorate is one
thousand supporters.
While the current President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi (he took office in 2014) has not yet
announced his intention to run in the upcoming elections, a number of politicians have
announced their intention to run, including the head of the Wafd Party abdulsand Yamama,
the head of the Republican People's party Hazem Omar, the head of the Democratic Peace
Party Ahmed Al-fadali, Gamila Ismail from the Constitution Party, the head of the Egyptian
Social Democratic Party Farid Zahran, as well as the head of the former opposition Dignity Party Ahmed Tantawi.
