Tel Aviv-January 22, 2023
In a situation where the current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu finds himself in front of
Two major crises with his partners in the government coalition, less than a month after taking office
On a noisy night, about 100 thousand Israelis took to the streets of Tel Aviv, including former prime minister Yair Lapid, and thousands also took to the streets in several cities, rejecting the reforms Netanyahu seeks to introduce on the powers of the Supreme Court, including allowing Parliament to override the decisions of that court
But Netanyahu and his supporters see the reforms as necessary in order to ensure a diverse judicial system, and to allow for solutions that are blocked by the Supreme Court
Netanyahu heads a government that includes right-wing and ultra-religious parties, and is considered the most right-wing
Today, Netanyahu is holding his weekly cabinet meeting, in which he decides to dismiss the minister of Interior and health and the leader of the "Shas" movement, Aryeh Deri, from his post in implementation of the decision of the Supreme Court, which annulled his appointment, and said that it was due to Deri's conviction in corruption cases
A source close to Deri said that Netanyahu intends to dismiss the minister from the government, after a court order
Barak Seri, a former spokesman for Deri, told Army Radio that Deri would keep his hardline Shas party in the coalition government, as reported by Reuters "
After the expected dismissal, there will be two vacant ministerial positions in the Netanyahu government
However, it is expected that there will be protests within "Shas", which demands that Netanyahu find a constitutional solution to keep Deri in the government despite the Supreme Court decision
Removing Deri from the picture will weaken the Netanyahu government, as he is the strongest partner in the government, and this marks the beginning of a crisis in the coming weeks
Currently, Research is underway on how to compensate Deri for his removal from government posts
Religious Zionist ministers miss the weekly meeting in protest at the evacuation of a settlement outpost in the West Bank, in another crisis threatening the Netanyahu government
Party leader Bezalel Smotrich and party members say that the issue goes much deeper, pointing out that Defense Minister Yoav Galant, from Netanyahu's Likud party, did not grant powers to Smotrich, who is a second minister in the Ministry of Defense for the Civil Administration, i.e. the West Bank
They believe that the minister is procrastinating in the matter, which creates a crisis of confidence between the parties that threatens the Netanyahu government more than the Deri crisis that the latter was forced to
Outside the government coalition, protests are escalating for the third week against the Netanyahu government, which they say that with judicial reforms will undermine the nature of the democratic system
It was noteworthy on Saturday evening that Lapid, former Defense Minister Benny Gantz, and other members of the political elite participated in these protests
