The United Nations Office on drugs and crime classifies it as "one of the types of stimulating amphetamines," usually a combination of amphetamines, caffeine and other substances.

The manufacture of Captagon is not new in the region, and Syria is the most prominent source of that substance since before the outbreak of the war in 2011. However, the conflict made their manufacture more popular, used and exported. Captagon pill factories are also active in several areas in neighboring Lebanon.
