After Netanyahu's right-wing bloc won the majority of Knesset seats in the November legislative elections, Israeli Prime Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to announce today that he was able to form his government with his far-right allies, although there are no final agreements with them, unless he requests a few more days at the last minute
Netanyahu has until 11:59 p.m. local time (21: 59 p.m.G) to inform Israeli President Yitzhak Herzog that he "succeeded" in forming a government and then overthrowing the government of outgoing prime minister Yair Lapid.
This is only if he seeks to request a new extension. According to Israeli election laws, Netanyahu had until December 11 to announce his government, but he requested a maximum extension of 14 days. But Herzog gave him ten days.
Netanyahu could still ask for four more days, but the Israeli press ruled that out, expecting the government to be announced during the day, even if its details are not complete.
But Netanyahu's partners are well known: the ultra-Orthodox and ultra-religious parties Shas and yehudot Hatorah, the three ultra-right religious Zionist parties led by Bezalel Smotrich, the Jewish power of Itamar Ben-Gvir and the Noam party headed by Avi Maoz. Analysts say that this government will be the most right-wing and extreme in the history of Israel.
Netanyahu was the longest-serving prime minister in Israel's history, holding the post for 15 years from 1996 to 1999 and then from 2009 to 2021.
He is therefore used to forming coalitions, but he also has to distribute ministerial portfolios to officials from his party, which holds the largest number of seats in Parliament.
"There are requests from Likud deputies to get more important portfolios than the positions available to them as a result of agreements with other coalition partners,"the Maariv daily said, noting that a significant challenge remains prominent as the deadline approaches, noting that" there are requests from Likud deputies to get more important portfolios than the positions available to them as a result of agreements with other coalition partners".
