With strong criticism of the United Nations for its failure to protect civilians, events in the Sudanese province of Western Darfur on Saturday afternoon continue to cast a shadow over populations suffering from extremely difficult security and humanitarian conditions.
Events accusing the general coordinator of displaced persons and refugees have left government-backed forces with extensive destruction in the area, in the midst of burning villages and a massive wave of displacement.
The number of victims of bloody events in the Krink region, in the Sudanese region of Western Darfur, increased to 172, including 88 killed and 84 wounded, in less than a week, according to the Provincial Medical Committee.
The official spokesman for the displaced persons coordinator Adam Mallad said that the events began on Saturday afternoon when semi - regular forces attacked the area's residents with heavy weapons, following an altercation between a trader and a soldier about a "phone charge" that killed the soldier.
Despite more than 14 months since the signing of the Sudanese Peace Agreement in October 2020, the security dilemma remains one of the biggest challenges facing the province.
Killings and looting continued over the past months in most areas of Western Darfur, resulting in more than 1,000 deaths and injuries.
The implementation of the security arrangements clause of the Peace Agreement is a major dilemma.
5 of the signatory movements said that the failure to implement the provisions of the security arrangements threatened to undermine the peace process and put the country back in the war box.
