Ukraine said its air defenses shot down 23 of the 25 missiles that mainly targeted the capital. There were no reports of injuries. This is the second night in a row that the country has seen major Russian air strikes and the fifth so far this month.
"On the eve of May 9, they launched an offensive on the territory of Ukraine," the Ukrainian Air Force said in a statement on Telegram. Sergey Popko, head of the military administration for the city of Kyiv, said the Russians had tried to kill civilians.
The mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, said debris fell on a house in the Holosivsky district, southwest of Kyiv, but caused minor damage. A road was also strewn with debris in the Shevchenkivsky district, which is often targeted in the city center. Moscow denies targeting civilians and says its air strikes are aimed at reducing Ukraine's ability to fight.
