An investigation by Britain's Information Commissioner's Office found that TikTok was in breach of data protection law, stating that the breaches occurred between May 2018 and July 2020.

The organization estimated, according to what was published by the British Broadcasting Corporation “BBC”, that “Tik Tok” allowed up to 1.4 million children in Britain under the age of 13 years to use its platform in 2020, although its own rules do not allow children in this. UK data protection law states that platforms that use personal data when providing information to children under the age of 13 must obtain parental consent.

Information Commissioner John Edwards said: “There are laws in place to make sure our children are as safe in the digital world as they are in the physical world. TikTok did not abide by these laws.”

"As a result, an estimated one million people under the age of 13 have been given inappropriate access to the platform, with TikTok collecting and using their personal data, this means that their data may have been used to track and profile them, which may provide harmful and inappropriate content."
