After the announcement of former British prime minister Boris Johnson not to run for the leadership of the Conservative Party , and the withdrawal of his rival Penny Mordaunt ,
the leader of the conservative majority in the House of Commons, Rishi Sunak became the leader of the Conservative Party, and is scheduled to take over as prime minister, replacing Liz Truss, who resigned last week.
From inside the Conservative Party headquarters, Sunak made a short statement addressing the British in his first public speech as party leader, and Sunak praised Blaise truss for her leadership "under difficult circumstances abroad and at home".He said that he was "honored and honored" to receive the support of his fellow deputies and be elected party leader.
He vowed to work every day "to help the British people". He said Britain was a great country, but warned that it faced "profound"economic challenges.
He also pledged to serve the British "by acting with integrity and humility".
A spokesman for Truss had said that the transfer of power to Rishi Sunak would not take place today.
The incoming prime minister was warmly received by his fellow MPs from the Conservative Party at the party headquarters , some shook hands with him, others hugged him and some waved to the cameras, to which Sunak replied: "Thank you guys," pointing his thumbs up as he entered the building.
Sunak had addressed Conservative MPs at his meeting with them in Parliament, saying that this is a difficult period, and there are no easy answers, according to Simon Hoare, a Conservative MP.
Sunak added: "We have to hit the ground running, we have no time to waste."
He stressed that there will be no general elections, and expressed understanding for the request of the opposition parties for this.
"He is a politician who does not talk about problems, but seeks to give him patience to solve those problems,"he said.
Truss congratulated her prospective successor on winning the leadership of the Conservative Party.
Truss, who resigned last Thursday after just 45 days in office, said Sunak had her full support.
Sunak served as finance minister in Johnson's government from February 2020 to July 2022.
It is worth noting that Sunak will thus become the first British Prime Minister of Asian descent.
