According to a source, Britain granted 23 additional permits to French fishermen, as announced today by London and Brussels, following the expiration of the deadline set by Paris to resolve the dispute over fishing rights following Britain's departure from the European Union.
To date, France has obtained 1027 fishing permits since Brexit and claims 81 more, out of 104 that it had claimed in recent days by Friday, have made a case in the absence of a "goodwill gesture" by London.
A spokesperson for the British Government said that "last night, after receiving additional supporting evidence from the European Commission, the United Kingdom granted 18 licences for replacement vessels" to replace vessels that had previously been fishing in British waters.
The British official continued "the in-depth technical course of seven additional licence applications for replacement ships is expected to be completed."
Those decisions "brought to a close the period of intense talks" that had taken place in the past few days between Britain and the European Commission.
