"The German police have arrested a man accused of sending hate mail to public figures using the short name of a neo-Nazi gang responsible for killing 10 people."

The prosecutor in the western city of Frankfurt added: "The 53-year-old suspect, who was previously sentenced for other unspecified crimes motivated by far-right ideology, was arrested during a search of his Berlin apartment."

He is accused of sending hate threats and messages over three years to left - wing nationalist and regional politicians as well as to a Turkish - German lawyer, such as victims of far-right crimes.

The prosecutors added: "The suspect signed his letters under the acronym" NSU 2.0, "referring to the underground group National Socialists (NSU), which was accused of killing eight Greek and German Turks and police officers between 2000 and 2007. The remaining senior member of the gang was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2018.

Interior Minister Horst Seehofer is holding a press conference on politically motivated crimes in Germany, where the authorities have intensified their efforts to combat far-right extremism since a pro-immigration politician was shot dead and a synagogue exposed by a gunman in 2019.
