Controversy in France over Napoleon's legacy 200 years after his death, with anger among the left, a right - wing welcome and controversy on social media.

The celebration of the second centenary of the death of Napoleon Bonaparte, the most famous French emperor, sparked intense controversy and outrage among the opposition and the left, and the Government insisted on a solemn ceremony with the support of the right.

On social media, some supported the government's position, and others refused to celebrate because of its colonial record, recalling the adoption of the slavery regime in 1802.

Napoleon died in 1841 in exile on the British island of Saint Helena.
