French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanen was interrogated in a complaint filed by a French woman accusing him of raping her in 2009.

A lawyer said that two judges questioned Darmanin as a "witness in the case," due to lack of serious evidence incriminating him yet, asserting that Darmanian spoke to the judges "at his request."

The French minister is facing charges of rape, sexual harassment and mistrust, in an incident dating back to 2009. The case was rejected several times, but last June, appeals judges in the French capital, Paris, ordered a new investigation to be opened.

The complainant accuses Darmanyan of forcing her to have a sexual relationship with him in 2009, when she sought to mediate with him to erase a conviction from her criminal record when the latter was in charge of the legal service of the right-wing Union for the Popular Movement.

In turn, Darmanyan admitted, in previous press statements, of the incident, stressing that it was consensual during his youth.

Several protests erupted in France after French President Emmanuel Macron announced, last July, that Darmanian had been chosen as Minister of Interior, against the background of the aforementioned incident.
