German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier announced, in a televised address today, Monday, that Germany will implement, starting next Wednesday, the most stringent lockdown in the country's history, stressing the seriousness of the epidemic situation.

Steinmeier said in his speech: "Starting from Wednesday, our public and private life will be severely restricted than at any time in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany. The situation is dire. Thousands of deaths in a week, and the outbreak of the epidemic, which is threatening to get out of control, we cannot avoid Strict procedures. "

The German president explained that the celebrations for Christmas and the New Year 2021 will be different from what the authorities had hoped for, as the coming weeks "will be a stressful period for many people."

Steinmeier stressed that these restrictions "threaten the economic life," but "the main goal must be to reduce the number of infected people as soon as possible, and then maintain a low rate of infection transmission."

Germany has recorded an increase in the number of infections with the Coronavirus in recent days, and the total cases recorded since the start of the outbreak have risen to more than one million and 350 thousand, and the death toll has exceeded 22 thousand so far.
