Australia-Sydney-January 8, 2023

Due to a previous tropical storm accompanied by heavy rainfall last week

Flood waters flooded areas of up to fifty kilometers in some areas and led to "covering the entire horizon".

Australian Army helicopters are working to transport hundreds of communities isolated by severe flooding in the north-west of the country, where water covers the entire horizon in some areas.

The crisis began in the sparsely populated Kimberley region of Western Australia

"Water is everywhere,"State Emergency Services Minister Stephen Dawson told reporters in Perth, the capital of Western Australia.

"People in the Kimberley were struggling with floods that had only a one percent chance of happening.. It's the worst in Western Australia".

This weather emergency comes after repeated floods in the east of the country over the past two years due to the El Nino phenomenon, which occurs every few years.

Reuters quoted the Australian Meteorological Authority on Sunday, that the floods led to the isolation of towns.

The town of Fitzroy Crossing, with a population of about 1,300, was among the worst affected areas and supplies had to be airlifted there after roads were flooded.

The Bureau of Meteorology said rainfall had moderated as the previous storm moved east into the Northern Territory, but warned of continued "significant record-breaking flooding" in Western Australia's Kimberley region.

The state's emergency services warned residents in other small communities about rising water levels in the area, which includes the resort of Broome, located about 1,240 kilometers north of Perth.

Prime minister Anthony Albanese described the floods as "devastating" and pledged federal assistance.
