The provincial government said in an online statement that the landslide "occurred on the top of a mountain" at 06:00 local time (22:00 GMT) at a forest farm near the city of Leshan.

"As of 3:30 p.m., the bodies of 14 victims were recovered and five people are still missing," the statement added, and the authorities sent more than 180 relief workers and more than 12 rescue equipment to the site, while "urgent search and rescue work continues".

The site is located in a mountainous area about 240 kilometers from the provincial capital of Chengdu, where the remote, densely forested area is prone to natural disasters, including landslides and earthquakes.
