2 June 2023 - Pyongyang

Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un announced on Monday a plan to launch a spy satellite in June aimed specifically at monitoring the growing US military presence in the region, noting, in particular, the recent military maneuvers with Seoul.

State media said the missile fell into the sea on Wednesday due to a loss of thrust and sank along with its payload of satellites.
and confirmed that Pyongyang would make a second attempt as soon as possible.

"It is certain that the DPRK military reconnaissance satellite will be properly put into orbit in the near future and can begin its mission," it said.

Pyongyang released pictures of what it says is the new "Cholima-1" satellite launch rocket as it was launched from a site on the coast.

The broad and rounded top of Chollima, the name of a winged horse from mythology and so present in the country's propaganda, appears to hold the satellite.

Seoul, Tokyo, Washington, and Paris condemned the launch on Wednesday, saying it violated United Nations resolutions that prohibit Pyongyang from conducting experiments using ballistic missile technology, just like those used in satellite launches.

Kim Yo Jong said these criticisms were "contradictory" because Washington and other countries had already launched "thousands of satellites".

"The United States are gangsters who claim that even if the DPRK launches a satellite into space orbit using a balloon, it is illegal and (constitutes) a threat," it added in a statement carried by the official news agency.

Analysts believe that the presence of a spy satellite in orbit will allow North Korea to target US and South Korean forces more accurately.

"A satellite for military purposes can gather intelligence, determine a geographical location, and attack enemy satellites," said South Korean army general Chun In Boom, saying that this constitutes a "space war."
