There has been an outcry on social media in recent months, with a campaign against halal food in which people accuse restaurants and food chains of taking a biased approach
towards Hindus, and authorities in Punjab and Delhi have asked hotels to say whether meat is halal or jatka, a practice of killing an animal with one blow rather than slaughter in the Islamic way.
According to one Russian news agency, the Hindu Army, a right-wing group, threatened the Kentucky restaurant chain across Delhi with serious consequences if they omitted Jatka meat from their menu as of January 1, 2022.
President Vishnu Gupta said that "hundreds of Hindu meat vendors are forced to close their business because these food outlets have forced them to buy only halal meat, and halal certificates are mandatory to provide these outlets with raw meat because Hindu meat vendors have ceased to operate."
Gupta said they also issued a warning to other food chains and five-star hotels and asked them to include non-halal meat on their menus to respect Hindu faith and culture. Muslims don't eat meat other than halal. Many people in the Hindu religion don't eat halal meat. If they can respect Islam, what are the problems in giving the same respect to Hindus? We won't let KFC operate as of next month.
Similar controversies were reported earlier this year, with Hindu groups accusing food delivery platform Zomato and fast food chain McDonald's of serving only halal food.
