The Indian Prime Minister affirmed that the reforms in the agricultural sector aim to help farmers, at a time when thousands continued to protest against three new laws for the sale and purchase of agricultural products.
"The reforms (new laws) will help attract investment in agriculture and benefit farmers," Prime Minister Narendira Modi told the annual meeting of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry in New Delhi.
"The aim of all government reforms is to make farmers' work prosperous," he said, adding that the private sector should help improve the country's agriculture sector.
But farmers in the northern states, who are implementing the protests, fear that the new legislation will eventually dismantle organized markets in India and prevent the government from buying wheat and rice at guaranteed prices, which will leave them at the mercy of private buyers.
