Media reported that guards of a merchant ship managed to thwart an attack by pirates in the Gulf of Guinea.

The website confirmed that the owner of the ship that was attacked had previously hired a group of armed guards, most likely Nigerians, to ensure the security of the ship (whose name and destination were not revealed).

The site pointed out that the ship’s crew, consisting of Russian-speaking sailors, were instructed to barricade themselves and not approach the windows, while the security team shot the attackers with automatic rifles and heavy machine guns.

In return, the pirates fired several bullets, leaving holes in the hull.

The pirates were eventually forced to retreat, and at least one of them is believed to have been shot by the guards.
