The ministry said in a statement that it received information on Monday evening that an Israeli citizen was kidnapped in Gondar, which was the capital of the Ethiopian Empire and is today the most populous city in the Amhara region.

In its statement, the ministry did not give any additional details about the identity of the kidnapper or the circumstances in which he was abducted.

"The Department for the affairs of Israelis abroad is in contact with his family members in Israel and is working with Interpol on this matter,"the statement added.

The ministry confirmed in its statement that "the Israeli consul in Ethiopia is in contact with local security officials" in order to free the kidnapped citizen "as soon as possible".

The Amhara region in northern Ethiopia has been in turmoil since the Ethiopian federal authorities tried in mid-April to dismantle the region's" special forces".

The "special forces" are paramilitary units formed by several Ethiopian States over the past 15 years outside of any legal framework.
