Following the killing and representation of "seven Sudanese prisoners and a civilian" by the Ethiopian army, the Sudan decided to recall its ambassador to Addis Ababa and Ethiopia's ambassador to Khartoum, condemning that inhumane behaviour.

Sudanese Foreign Affairs has also initiated "a formal complaint to the Security Council and relevant international and regional organizations".

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Sudan issued a statement condemning in the strongest terms the Ethiopian Army's crime against the principles of international humanitarian law by killing seven Sudanese prisoners and a civilian after their abduction from inside Sudanese territory on 22 June, taking them into Ethiopian territory, killing them and publicly representing their bodies.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to recall that the Government of the Sudan reserves the full right guaranteed by the Charter of the United Nations to defend its territory and the dignity of its human being. The Sudan will immediately recall its Ambassador to Ethiopia for consultation. The Ethiopian Ambassador in Khartoum will be summoned today to inform him of the condemnation and condemnation by the Sudan."

The statement added the Sudanese army's assertion "categorically to the Sudanese people that this treacherous attitude will not go unanswered and will respond to this cowardly behaviour as appropriate".

Ethiopia has reportedly not immediately commented on the accusations.

A Sudanese military official confirmed that soldiers had been captured in a border area near the disputed area of Al-Faqah.
