The conflict over gold mines in the Kori Bogde region, on the border between Chad and Libya, has resulted in hundreds of deaths, according to unofficial estimates, while the Government has declared 100 people dead in clashes that began as a result of a two-person conflict that has evolved into a "massacre".

The Chadian Minister of Defence, Lieutenant General Dawood Yahya Ibrahim, revealed that the clashes took place on 23 May in Kori Bogodi near the Libyan border and erupted after a "petty argument between two people and then evolved". He continued that clashes ensued between miners, and that the death toll was about 100 Other 40 were injured and 20 persons were arrested.

. The Kori Bogodi region is filled with mines, often clandestinely exploited by many gold prospectors from all over the country and from neighbouring States, but the region and the climate make it difficult for the authorities to control these lands.

There have always been clashes between rival tribes, whose sons live in Chad, Libya and the Sudan, and Kori Bogodi is situated in a mountainous region on both sides of the Chad-Libya border.
