In a statement issued by the Dalai Lama's office, the Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader apologized to the child and his family for "the harm that his words may have caused" and stressed that he "regrets" the incident.
The statement, a copy of which went viral on Twitter, said: "His Holiness often jokes with people he meets in an innocent and playful way, even in public and in front of camera lenses.
According to Indian media, this dialogue between the Dalai Lama and the child took place during an event on February 28, when the Dalai Lama addressed a group of students at the tsglakhang temple in Dharamshala, northern India.
The 87-year-old spiritual leader has been living in India since 1959, when he led an unsuccessful uprising against the authorities in China.
The 23-second video sparked widespread outrage in the world and the Dalai Lama was harshly criticized, even accusing him of "paedophilia" and calling his behavior "inappropriate".
It is worth mentioning that despite the strangeness of this behavior, the Tibetan people prefer to make peace by sticking out the tongue.
