At a time of heightened tension around the Zaporeggia nuclear plant in southern Ukraine, indicating that its operations were not affected, the Ukrainian Nuclear Power
Corporation Inergoatom announced, in a statement, that it had been subjected to an "unprecedented" Russian cyberattack on its site
"On 16 August 2022, the most powerful cyberattack occurred since the beginning of the Russian invasion against the official Energoatom website," it was posted on Telegram. Adding that the site was "attacked from Russian territory."
The Russian "People's Cyber Army" group used more than seven million Internet robots to attack the website for three hours.
Since the end of July, multiple bombings have targeted the site of the Zaporeggia nuclear plant, on which the parties have exchanged accusations. Fears of a nuclear catastrophe were also raised.
Prior to Russia's military operation, Ukraine relied on four nuclear plants to secure about 50 percent of its electricity needs.
It should be noted that Ukraine experienced the world's worst nuclear accident in 1986 when the fourth reactor at the Chernobyl plant exploded, leading to a large radiation leak.
