On August 6, 1945, the United States dropped the first atomic bomb used in history on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, which destroyed the city and killed 140 1,000 people.

On the ninth of the same month, three days after the first bomb was dropped, the United States dropped the second bomb on the city of Nagasaki, killing another 70 thousand people.

The Japanese city of Nagasaki commemorated the victims of the American atomic bombing on August 9 during World War II.

During the commemoration of the 77th anniversary of the US atomic bombing of the city, including diplomats from the nuclear powers, the participants observed a minute's silence at 11:02 a.m., the moment the bomb exploded over Nagasaki, the southern Japanese city, on 9 August 1945.

Nagasaki Mayor Tomisa Tawi, referring to the current war in Ukraine, said that this crisis had shown the world that another nuclear attack was "not just a concern, but a tangible and present crisis."

Speaking on Tuesday from the Nagasaki Peace Park, he continued: "The belief that nuclear weapons can be possessed not for actual use but for deterrence is nothing more than hope."

"Nuclear weapons can be used as long as they exist," Tawi added, adding, "Their elimination is the only way to save humanity's future.
