Liverpool beat Ajax Amsterdam 1-0 away from home with a goal that came with the support of luck in their opening match in the Champions League football, and luck stood beside the English team at times, but also showed his qualifications to compete for the title.

Ajax back Nicholas Taliavico put the ball past his team in the 35th minute to give the England champions a winning start in Group D. Liverpool seemed to be the strongest team on the field, although Ajax had created many good chances at Johan Cruyff Stadium.

Daffy Claassen hit the post and Adrian sent Quincy Promise's attempt at close range after Ajax had created several excellent chances.

But Liverpool, who won their sixth European Cup title in 2019, proved deserving of victory, possessing the ball for long periods and launching quick counter-attacks and keeping a clean sheet despite the absence of prominent defender Virgil van Dyck, who suffered a serious knee injury on Saturday.
