The reds continue to look a pale shadow of their best selves after four winless.

Jurgen Klopp described it as 'a little step in the right direction but that only highlighted how far his Liverpool side has regressed.

True, the point they took from Chelsea in Tuesday night's goalless stalemate was positive after three consecutive defeats but that only told half the story.

Liverpool was second-best to a dysfunctional mid-table team that have just lost their manager and but for the profligacy of Chelsea's forwards and Alisson's saves they would have been beaten.

A draw offered limited respite but it won't last long. On Sunday, they host leaders Arsenal, who are at the polar opposite end of the confidence scale after seven consecutive league wins.

Amid the feverish rush to sack under-performing managers in the Premier League right now, Klopp has been very candid of late in acknowledging how Liverpool's form would put his job in jeopardy if he didn't have so much credit in the bank.

The German is, of course, going nowhere but is fumbling around trying to rediscover a lost version of Liverpool. A version that was brighter and braver, more assured of themselves, and more in control.

Jamie Carragher summed the situation up nicely: 'The thing watching Liverpool, they still play the same way, the same idea is there but they can't do it.'

He believed this loss something will ultimately cost them Champions League football and is probably right.

When they smashed Manchester United 7-0 just a month ago, you would well imagine Liverpool going on a stellar run of form to gatecrash the top four. It hasn't proved the turning point in their season Klopp hoped for.

The manager gave his players Wednesday off for a rest but his mind would have been churning as he searches for solutions for short and long-term problems.

His most immediate task is to decide on his team for Arsenal's visit having made six changes - with only one, Virgil van Dijk, enforced - at Stamford Bridge.

Van Dijk, who missed out with illness, hasn't been able to bring his customary assurance to Liverpool's defense this season.
