The British public prosecutor announced
The rape charge against Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood has been dropped.
The prosecutor's statement also noted that the charges, which include "controlling and coercive behavior,"were dropped.
Greenwood was formally charged in October, following an investigation that began in January 2022.
The statement of dropping the charges was as follows :
• "In this case, the combination of the withdrawal of the main witnesses and the new evidence that has emerged has led to the absence of a realistic prospect of conviction,"he said.
• Therefore, under these circumstances, we consider it our duty to stop the case,"he said.
* "It is the duty of the prosecution to keep the cases under review".
Greenwood, 21, was arrested in January 2022 after posting photos and videos on social media.
The Manchester United club announced the player's suspension, he was not allowed to train with the team, and the club has not yet commented on the decision of the public prosecution.
Greater Manchester Police said it understood the reasons for the suspension of proceedings, but stressed its "commitment to investigating allegations of violence against women and girls".
