Rhoden began his bodybuilding career in 1992 as an amateur, but later suffered numerous injuries, and then addicted to alcohol following the death of his father.

After years of slow recovery, he returned to the sport, making a good appearance in the "Mister Olympia" competition, where he was placed 11th in 2011 until becoming a champion in the 2018.
