The South African Football Association confirmed on Sunday that the country's national team defender, Motjika Madisha, was killed in a traffic accident in Johannesburg.

"I don't understand what I heard yet. But it is terrible news for football," South African Football Association president Danny Jordan said in a statement.

Madisha, 25, who was accompanied by another person, died when their car crashed into a billboard pillar and caught fire. The other person was also killed.

Madisha belongs to Mamelodi Sundowns, the local league champion, and has played 12 international matches for the country's first national team.

His last international participation was in the African Nations Cup qualifiers against Sao Tome and Principe last month.
