And this one-meter-eighty-centimeter robot, called EveR 6, guided the musicians of the Korean National Orchestra. He took on the task solo during part of the concert, while a flesh-and-blood conductor helped him for half an hour.

The ever 6 robot came out of an elevator to look at the stage of the Korean National Theater, and turned towards the audience before bending down in front of it, amid the cheers of about 950 spectators.

Throughout its presentation, the robot fixed its blue eyes on the musicians, without blinking, and shook its head to the rhythm of the music.

Kim Ji-Min, a 19-year-old music student, said, "I came here wondering if the robot could succeed in the task without any error, but I found that it is in perfect harmony with the musicians. It was a whole new world for me".

Previously, robot-led concerts have been held elsewhere in the world, most notably in Italy in 2017 using the YuMi robot, but this was the first concert of its kind in South Korea, where EveR 6 was designed.

Developed by the Korean Institute of industrial technology, a public institution, the robot has been programmed to replicate the movements of a real orchestra conductor using motion capture technology, which records human pauses and turns via sensors.

However, the robot is not able to hear or improvise in real time.

The developers of this technology are working so that the robot will eventually be able to perform movements that are not programmed in advance, emphasized Lee Dong-Wook, the engineer who created it.

Song Joo-ho, a music journalist who attended the concert, said that being able to improvise and communicate with musicians in real time would be a big step forward.

He noted that the Robot "should be able to improvise in real time when musicians make a mistake or when something goes wrong".
