Deputy Chief Designer at the Russian Information Satellite Systems Corporation, Alexander Kuzovnikov, announced that the corporation is working on developing a large batch of advanced satellites to operate in Earth orbits.
In an interview, Kuzovnikov said: "We currently have about two thousand square meters of land that is not used for any purpose yet. These lands can be used to establish satellite collections and centers for receiving and processing data from these satellites ... We are working on this project with the aim of launching 264 new satellites from "Marathon type to Earth orbits. These satellites will be designated to secure the Internet of Things."
Kuzovnikov indicated that his foundation plans to launch about half of the aforementioned satellites in the third quarter of 2024, so that these satellites will secure Internet networks for regions in the Arctic, and the ground stations necessary to manage these satellites and receive their signals will also be operational in the same period.
He explained that work on developing a prototype "Marathon" satellites will start in the second quarter of 2022, while work on the ground technical complexes for these satellites will begin in the first quarter of 2023, and in the second half of 2023 it is likely that 6 will be equipped and launched. Moons of the aforementioned model to Earth orbits.
According to Kuzovnikov, the period of operation of each of the "Marathon" satellites is supposed to range from 4 to 5 years, and sometimes up to 7 years, and after the end of the service period of each satellite, it will go out of its orbit to be dumped in one of the oceans or seas on Earth.
