The victims included 8 children, 5 of them siblings, 12 were buried alive, more than 140 people were injured and 200 head of cattle died.

Heavy rains followed by strong winds have killed at least 27 people, including eight children, in northwestern Pakistan, officials said .

"At least 12 people were buried alive after the roofs and walls of their houses collapsed,"Disaster Management Authority spokesman Timur Ali Khan said.

The storms hit four districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province late on Saturday, and 15 people were killed in Bannu district, including five brothers aged between two and 11 years.

More than 140 people were injured and more than 200 head of cattle died.

For its part, the authorities declared a state of emergency in the four provinces.

Last year, Pakistan experienced unprecedented summer monsoon rains that flooded more than a third of the country, damaged two million homes and killed more than 1,700 people.

The authorities in the south of the country also announced, on Sunday, that a hurricane is approaching Pakistan and India coming from the Arabian Sea.

A statement from The Disaster Management Authority of Sindh province warned of extremely heavy rains and winds of up to 100 kilometers per hour later this week.
