At least three people were killed
and 816 injured in a 5.9-magnitude earthquake that struck the northwestern province of West Azerbaijan last night, the provincial governor said on Sunday.
The earthquake occurred at 9:44 pm local time (18: 14 GMT) at a depth of 7 km, its epicenter was in the city of Khoi, according to media reports.
The Iranian seismological center noted that several aftershocks occurred after the main earthquake, the largest of which reached a magnitude of 4.2.
The earthquake also led to a temporary power outage in Khoi, the problem was subsequently resolved.
Reports from the areas affected by the earthquake pointed out that the extent of damage in rural areas is estimated to be severe.
This is the second major earthquake to hit the province in two weeks. A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck the city of Khoi on January 19،
As a result, more than 190 people were injured.
