In addition, increased frequency of coastal flooding during storms leads to rising sea levels and increased tidal flooding.

Due to climate change, a study by the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted that sea levels around the United States would rise about 30 centimetres in the next 30 years, the same as during the last century.

The study predicted that sea levels on the American coasts would increase between 25 and 30 centimetres by 2050.

The Director of the Oceans Section of the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Nicole Lubov, said that devastating flooding of beaches would increase 10 times in 30 years.

She added: "I can tell you with full confidence that this is not the kind of change we grew up to."

The study, which is part of planning efforts to cope with and adapt to the projected rise in sea water levels, shows a high degree of certainty for the next three decades, regardless of any efforts to contain greenhouse emissions that increase the planet's temperature.

Gina McCarthy, President Joe Biden's climate adviser, said: "These new data on rising seas are the most recent confirmation that the climate crisis, as the President said, has raised the red flag of danger."
