Last December 2022 the Scottish parliament passed a legislation bill that can ease the requirement
for people to officially change their gender.
today, the UK government stated that they will block Scotland's controversial gender reform bill.
Scotland Secretary Alister Jack said on Monday
he was concerned that the move by the devolved legislature in Edinburgh to make it easier for people to change their legally recognized gender would negatively affect equalities legislation across England, Scotland and Wales."I have decided to make an order under section 35 of the Scotland Act 1998, preventing the Scottish parliament's Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill from proceeding to Royal Assent," Jack said.
Royal assent is the final stage required to get proposed legislation onto the statute books. Under devolution rules, which led to the establishment of the Scottish parliament in 1999, London can block legislation if ministers believe it will have an "adverse effect on the operation of the law".Scotland's nationalist First Minister Nicola Sturgeon earlier on Monday warned London against any bid to block the law, saying her government is prepared to "rigorously" defend its powers all the way to the UK's top court.
