Warning of the further deterioration of the country, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterich, sounded the alarm on the impact of the worsening humanitarian and living crisis in Afghanistan.

"It is our moral responsibility not to abandon the people of Afghanistan, who desperately need peace, hope and assistance," the United Nations Secretary-General said, noting that more than half of the country's population faces extreme levels of hunger.

During a meeting of the Security Council on Afghanistan, Guterich said that the international community "needs to work to prevent further deterioration of the situation in Afghanistan."

The United Nations official noted that Afghanistan "is on the verge of perish after 6 months of the Taliban coming to power," adding that the daily life of Afghans "has become a frozen hell because of the harsh winter, in which people burn their property for heating, while hospitals suffer from overcrowding and lack of resources."

People suffered from deadly and preventable diseases such as measles, diarrhoea and even polio, noting that millions of children, especially girls, were out of school, and 70 percent of teachers were unpaid.

He called for the approval of all financial transactions necessary to carry out humanitarian and relief activities in the country as soon as possible.

This comes as observers find that one of the causes of the worsening crisis in Afghanistan was the cessation of international support after the Taliban took control of the country in August last year, amid information that nearly $10 billion of the Afghan Central Bank's reserves are frozen abroad.

At the beginning of this year, the United Nations Organization launched a $5 billion humanitarian response plan in Afghanistan, the largest single-nation humanitarian appeal, to provide relief to more than 22 million Afghans inside the country and to support some 6 million Afghan refugees and displaced persons in neighbouring countries.
