has filed a complaint with the International Criminal Court, after Israeli raids targeted a building with international media offices. This provoked international reactions ranging from concern to discontent about the safety of media professionals in particular to civilians in general. Reporters Without Borders considered that such targeting could amount to war crimes, according to a spokesperson.
According to the complaint, "23 local and international media outlets were destroyed after Israeli strikes," referring to a bombing of Palestinian and foreign media offices.
In her complaint addressed to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Fatou, in a draft dated 16 May, Reporters Without Borders continued that it "considers the deliberate targeting of the media and the complete and deliberate destruction of its equipment to be a war crime in accordance with Article VIII of the Rome Charter."
The complaint states that "not only did the Israeli army cause very significant material damage to the liberation districts whose journalists, equipment and facilities are protected by the protection of the civilian population, but also impeded media coverage of a conflict that directly and dangerously affects the civilian population."
Israeli rockets destroyed a 13 - story building that housed, in particular, the offices of the Associated Press and Al Jazeera.
The Israeli army had informed the building's residents that it should be evacuated before it was bombed.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu considered that the building was a "perfectly legitimate target," stressing that its targeting was based on intelligence.
Reporters Without Borders reported that it had already filed a complaint with the International Criminal Court against the backdrop of "the deliberate targeting by the Israeli army of dozens of Palestinian journalists covering the demonstrations + return march in spring 2018."
Reporters Without Borders called on the Prosecutor to include the events of recent days in the investigation opened in March of crimes believed to have been committed in the Palestinian territories, in an initiative rejected by Israel but welcomed by Palestinians.
