China stressed that it will improve regulations and policies to protect Taiwan people and ensure that they receive the same treatment on the mainland, indicating that it is willing to promote the peaceful development of relations across the Taiwan Straits

Wang Yang, China's chief political advisor, stressed the importance of creating a common market and boosting the economy of the Chinese nation, noting that economic cooperation remains the basis for the growth of cross-strait relations and serves the common interests of people on both sides of the strait, referring to Taiwan.

He pointed out that although affected by the COVID-19 epidemic, trade across the Taiwan Strait recorded double-digit growth in the first ten months of 2020, reflecting the great momentum, potential and flexibility of cross-strait economic cooperation.

The mainland will improve relevant regulations and policies to protect the well-being of Taiwan people and ensure that they receive the same treatment on the mainland, he said, adding that the mainland will also support Taiwan companies to participate in the Belt and Road Initiative and the National Strategy for Coordinated Regional Development.

The Taiwan Strait, also known as the Formosa Strait, is a sea passage between mainland China and Taiwan and forms part of the South China Sea and connects with the East China Sea in the northeastern region.

This strait was the scene of many armed conflicts in the Chinese Civil War of 1949.

It is noteworthy that China considers Taiwan as part of its territory despite the existence of an independent government on the island since the supporters of the nationalist "Kuomintang" party resorted to it in the wake of their defeat in the civil war with the Communists in the forties of the last century.
