The High Representative for Security and Foreign Policy in the European Union, Josep Borrell, today, Wednesday, expressed his hope for a change in the Turkish position in the coming days regarding its recent actions.
Borrell stressed that he "is still waiting for Ankara to send positive signals to the Union, days before the European summit on December 10 and 11," as the leaders of the 27 member states will review Turkey's actions, especially in the eastern Mediterranean, and take the appropriate decision regarding their relations with it, according to The Italian news agency "ACI".
The agency indicated that the Europeans are working on two paths, which will be determined by the decisions of the Turkish government in the coming days, either "heading towards a positive path and dialogue between the two parties", or "moving towards measures and restrictions if Ankara insists on continuing with its provocations."
Also today, Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio pointed to the "increasing growth of Turkey's role in the eastern Mediterranean," explaining that this matter "has implications not only on political assets in Libya, but also on Cyprus, Iraq and Syria, and more generally on regional cooperation in the field of energy.
Addressing the virtual opening session of the annual Mediterranean Dialogues Forum, he said: "If Turkey shares values and interests with the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean, it must also make a tangible contribution to maintaining a stable, secure and predictable context in the region."
